SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Christine Valente and
Kathryn Tomaselli scored go-ahead goals for the Dutchwomen but the Bobcats kept pace as Union and Quinnipiac end in a 2-2 tie at Messa Rink Friday evening.
Despite being outshot 34-17 by the Bobcats, the Dutchwomen defense led by
Shenae Lundberg had a strong outing containing the Quinnipiac attack. Union earns their fourth-ever tie against Quinnipiac and their first since January 9, 2009. Additionally, the Dutchwomen earn their first point on conference play this season.
The man-advantage continued to produce for the Dutchwomen offense as Union was able to strike first in the first period as
Christine Valente scored from
Maddy Norton and
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine. Despite the opening goal, the Quinnipiac attack held the majority of shots in the first stanza as the Bobcats tallied a 15-5 advantage. However, the Dutchwomen defense kept leading scorer Kelly Babstock at-bay to end the first stanza with a 1-0 edge.
Quinnipiac managed to level the score at 14:04 of the second period with Morgan-Fritz Ward dishing the puck to Nicole Brown that banged off the post and in for the equalizer. Quinnipiac was looking to add more towards the end of the period but Lundberg was there with an array of saves to keep the score level at one. Lundberg's defensive efforts were highlighted by a miscue by the Union defense in which Nicole Kosta had a breakaway towards the goal. Kosta's backhand attempt however was met with a pad save by the sophomore netminder.
In the third period, the Dutchwomen were able to capitalize on a defensive error from Quinnipiac in the third as a clear attempt failed with
Elsa Bruestle gathering the puck. The initial shot by Bruestle was blocked by Chelsea Laden but a rebound to
Kathryn Tomaselli allowed her to bury the shot to give Union a 2-1 lead.
However, Kelly Babstock leveled the score five minutes later as she intercepted a pass to give the ECAC Player of the Month in October a breakaway towards net. The forward made a few stick moves and snapped a wrist shot by Lundberg for the equalizer. Both teams had worthy opportunities to break the deadlock but after regulation, the score remained at two.
The Bobcats had the first worthy chance in extra time Babstock nearly connected with Kosta on a centering pass but the Union defense was there to break up the play. Moments later, Valente received a cross-ice pass which found the net but was blocked by Laden to rob the forward of a second goal and end the match in a draw.
Lundberg (2-2-1) paced the goaltenders with 31 saves while Laden (1-2-1) tallied 16. Quinnipiac went scoreless on the power-play in two attempts while the Dutchwomen tallied one goal in three tries.
Union (3-5-1, 0-2-1 ECAC) will be looking for more points in conference play as the Dutchwomen will host Princeton (3-3-1, 1-2-1) tomorrow afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m. Quinnipiac (5-4-1, 2-2-1 ECAC) will be paired up with Rensselaer tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. as well.
