SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard
Shayla Madden matched her season high with 18 points and junior guard
Kelsey McDonald had seven rebounds and four assists to lead Union College to a 47-44 non-league win over Utica College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Dutchwomen, winners of five straight, are now 6-3 while the Pioneers fell to 4-5.
Madden scored 18 for the second straight game and also had six boards.
Brittney Kenney scored nine and
Kate Thompson had eight for Union, which shot 31% but forced 20 Utica turnovers.
The Pioneers were led by Meghan Fiore, who matched Madden with 18 points, and also recorded the double double with 11 rebounds. Mary Miceli had 12 points and five boards. Alyssa Filkins dished out a game best seven assists and her six steals were a game high as well. Utica shot 29% for the contest, but outrebounded the Dutchwomen, 43-41.
Utica took a 23-20 lead into the half, and led 27-20 with 18:04 left in the second half after a layup by Fiore. But the Dutchwomen went on a 16-5 run for a 36-32 lead with 10:34 left after Madden's second straight three pointer. She had 10 points during that run. Utica was within one twice in the final two minutes, including with 1:50 left at 43-42 after a three by Fiore and a layup by Brittany Baudanza with five seconds left in the half. But Union avoided the foul on a fast break layup by
Kate Thompson off Madden's pass for the 47-44 final.
The Dutchwomen are now idle until the new year, when they will play four straight home games from January 4-12. Clarkson comes in for a Liberty League game on the 4th at 6 p.m. and Union will host Bard the following afternoon at 2 p.m.
