Bears outlast Dutchwomen in 1-0 defeat

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union offense could not slip one by Brown goaltender Aubree Moore as she made 33 saves giving Brown a 1-0 victory at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon.

Each of the teams played evenly to open up the first period of play. Throughout the entire first period, both Brown (2-8-1, 2-6-0 ECAC) and Union (3-9-3, 0-5-3) managed to skate without conceding a penalty. Brown held the shot advantage early as they tallied a 9-5 advantage in the first period. With the momentum, Brown was able to open the scoring. Jessica Hoyle took advantage of a Dutchwomen turnover to get a shot by Shenae Lundberg unassisted to give the Bears the first goal, her first of her collegiate career.

Union came out of the locker room for the second period with a much more aggressive pace, forcing the Bears to draw penalties. The Dutchwomen were able to draw four penalties throughout the first 12 minutes of the second period. However, Moore turned away multiple chances, which included point-blank shots from Jessica Kaminsky, Christine Valente and Rhianna Kurio. In addition, the Bears defense clogged shooting lanes as the Dutchwomen shots found Bears defenders. The officials reviewed one of Valente's shots after a scrum ensued in front of the net but the referees deemed it was not a goal. Union kept the pressure after the power plays but continued to be thwarted by the Brown defense. Brown nearly tacked on a second goal as time was winding down but the odd bounce off a Union defender that passed Lundberg was blown dead as time expired.

The Union attack did not let up as the Bears were on their heels in the third period. Kaminsky tested Moore again with a slap shot in the middle of the offensive third but the netminder made the save. Valente also tried as Kurio dished the puck near the net but Moore made the blocker save. With approximately a minute left in the period, Lundberg was pulled off the ice for the extra skater. Despite their efforts, the Dutchwomen could not find an equalizer as Brown held on for the 1-0 decision.

Aubree Moore improves to 2-6-3 while Lundberg made 16 saves and falls to 2-6-3. The Dutchwomen did not concede a penalty while Brown held Union's power play scoreless on four attempts. Shots were in favor of Union 33-17.

Brown's 2012 schedule concludes as the Bears will not play until January 5. The Bears will play host to Maine for a pair of home games. The Dutchwomen have two games remaining on the year, as Union will travel to Orono, ME to take on Maine on December 14 and 15 in a non-conference matchup. Friday's match will start at 7:00 p.m. while Saturday's match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
