Donohue and Dutchmen clinch playoff berth, 76-61 over Clarkson

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Keven Donohue scored a game high 21 points with 10 rebounds as the Union College men's basketball team clinched a berth in next week's Liberty League playoffs with a 76-61 triumph over Clarkson University at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. Union, winners of seven of eight, now stands 16-7 overall and 9-6 in the league. Clarkson fell to 15-9 and 8-7 in the league.

Union is in fourth place (the final playoff berth), one half game behind third place St. Lawrence, and one game ahead of Clarkson. Skidmore, which hosts Union Saturday at 4 p.m., is second at 10-5. Union swept Clarkson and thus owned the tie breaker that clinched the berth Friday night. Hobart (10-2) is the top seed.

Donohue made eight of 10 shots and posted his fifth double double of the season. Joe Mason had 13 points and eight assists with seven rebounds and Rusmir Dzanko scored 12 points. Terell Winney added 10. Union shot 53% for the contest and had a 41-33 rebounding edge.

John Coleman had a double double for Clarkson with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Jerrry Coleman added 11 points. Felix Llanos led the Golden Knights with 13 points. Clarkson shot 35% for the game.

The Dutchmen led by 12 at 42-30 at the half. Clarkson was within seven just 1:55 into the second half, and after a layup by John Coleman with 14:11 left, it was 48-40 Union. But the Dutchmen went on a roll and never looked back, and over the next 8:11, produced a 17-5 run that made it a 20 point game at 65-45 with 6:00 left.

Prior to the game, Dzanko and fellow senior Henry Stevens were recognized with their parents, before the final home game of their careers.

Union could finish as high as third, which would send them to the #2 seed campus next Wednesday. If the Dutchmen finish fourth, they would play at Hobart on Wednesday.
