Vassar wins, 63-53 despite Kenney's double double




POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- The Vassar College women's basketball team picked up its second-straight Liberty League victory with 63-53 win over Union College on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

The Brewers (12-7, 6-4) are in fourth place in the Liberty League and host RPI on Tuesday, January 7, at 6:00 p.m. at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Dutchwomen (9-11, 5-7) host William Smith on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

The Brewers were led by Cydni Matsuoka with 16 points and Kristyn Tempora with 13 points. Hannah Senftleber posted nine points and eight rebounds. Vassar shot 40% and outrebounded the Dutchwomen, 39-37.

For Union, Brittney Kenney posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double, her third of the season. Kelsey McDonald added nine points and Kate Thompson had nine rebounds. Union shot 31% for the game.


The Dutchwomen put together an 8-0 run to come within three points of the lead at 54-51with 2:26 remaining; but a clutch 3-pointer by junior Ali Higgins switched the momentum as Vassar finished 6-for-6 from the line to seal the 63-53 victory. Vassar led for most of the second half thanks to an early 11-1 run to push the lead to 40-31.

Vassar seemed in control at 54-43 with 5:49 to play, following an 8-0 run capped by a jumper by sophomore Hannah Senftleber. Union bounced back to 54-51 with an 8-0 run keyed by an old-fashioned three-point play by Carolyn Niedzwiecki.

In a competitive first half with four ties and six lead changes, Vassar took the largest lead of the half at 27-21 in the final minute with 3-pointers by senior Kristyn Tempora and freshman Michelle Foreman. Tempora connected on three 3-pointers for nine points in the half. Rachel Beaulac brought Union to 27-23 with a layup just before halftime.

Vassar held Union to 31.1 percent shooting from the floor while shooting 40 percent from the field. Although Union held a 22-12 points in the paint advantage, Vassar held a slight edge in rebounds 39-37.
