Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union advances to ECAC Semifinal Game in Atlantic City with 4-2 win over RPI

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sopohomore forward Kevin Sullivan scored two goals to lead No. 7/8 Union College men's ice hockey (22-7-7) to a 4-2 victory over RPI (12-24-3) in the second game of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals at Messa Rink Saturday night. Union wrapped up the best of three series, two games to none, and defeated RPI in all five meetings in 2011-12.

With the victory, the Dutchmen advance to the ECAC Championships at Atlantic City. Union will play a Semifinal Game Friday at either 4:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. at Boardwalk Hall. The Third Place game is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and the Championship Game will be at 7:00 p.m.

Alex Angers-Goulet had the first major chance of the contest, as he was fed a pass just outside the Union blue line and broke in alone. He attempted to deke sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick three times but the netminder stopped him on the shot with a low right pad save at 6:42.

Bo Dolan was called for a trip at 10:02, and just 13 seconds into the power play, the Dutchmen opened the scoring with their third power play goal in two nights. Junior forward Kyle Bodie held the puck and waited a second before firing a wrister from the bottom of the circle to the left of Bryce Merriam. Bodie went high from a tough angle just inside the goaltender's left shoulder for the 1-0 lead, with assists to freshman defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and junior forward Wayne Simpson. It was Bodie's ninth tally of the season.

RPI got its first power play of the night when junior defenseman Ryan Forgaard was called for a trip at 11:47, but the Engineers did not get a shot to the Dutchmen net.

A turnover in the Engineers zone led to a 2-0 Union lead at 14:03. Jeremy Welsh, parked in front of the net, got a pass from the corner from sophomore forward Daniel Carr and Josh Jooris. That gave Welsh 23 goals for the season, tying the school record set by Mario Valeri-Trabucco two seasons ago.

Grosenick was called for a hook near his net with 3:12 left, and he made one save on the Engineers' power play opportunity.

The shots in the period were in favor of Union, 7-6.

RPI's Guy Leboeuf was called for a cross check and the power play that started at 3:40 produced three shots on net that were stopped by Merriam. The Engineers came back and pressured Grosenick, who made back to back stops in front on shots by Jacob Laliberte and, off that rebound, Matt Neal, at 6:15.

The Engineers continued the threats with another close in stop on a Marty O'Grady shot, and the rebound came right to Mark McGowan, who missed a quick opening on the left side as he drive just went wide at 8:10.

RPI got on the board at 15:03, as Brock Higgs scored on a drive from the bottom of left circle, with assists from CJ Jee and Cullen. It was Higgs' third tally of the winter. Just 1:33 later, after a hitting from behind penalty on senior forward Kelly Zajac at 15:21, the Engineers tied it at 2-2 on a pretty tip in front by Bergin, who tipped in the pass from Higgs.

But Union regained the lead with just 2:23 left in the period. Sullivan blasted home a rebound to Merriam's left, after a shot from Kyle Bodie. Junior defenseman Shawn Stuart also assisted on Sullivan's fifth of the year.

Shots after two periods were 18-16, Union.

The Dutchmen made it 4-2 at the 5:58 mark of the third stanza. A shot from Kyle Bodie went off a defenseman and the left post but was deposited by Sullivan for his second of the night and sixth of the season.

RPI pulled the goaltender with 3:32 remaining in the third for an extra attacker.

The Engineers outshot the Dutchmen for the night, 29-24. Grosenick made 27 stops in the Dutchmen nets while Merriam saved 20.
