SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior attack
Nolan Connors had two goals and an assist, and sophomore midfielder Jonathan Andrews added a pair of goals to lead No. 12 Union men's lacrosse (5-1)to a 6-5 win over No. 22 Ithaca College (5-2) in its home opener at Frank Bailey Field.
Chris Duncan and Devin Weinshank each had a goal and an assist for the Bombers and Ithaca goalie Mac Davis made 13 saves, as Union outshot Ithaca 37-26 on the afternoon. Senior goalie
Sean Aaron made 11 saves in net for the Dutchmen, who earned their fifth consecutive win.
Union got off to a solid start, as Connors struck with 8:59 left in the first quarter to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead. Ithaca answered just 25 seconds later with a man down goal by Devin Weinshank, his eighth of the season with 8:34 to play in the opening quarter.
The Bombers took their first lead of the contest at 13:52 of the second quarter, as Chris Duncan struck for his first goal of the season to give Ithaca a 2-1 lead. Later in the quarter, Pat Slawta struck on a man-up opportunity to give Ithaca a 3-1 lead with 4:45 to play in the first half. Senior midfielder
Ethan Meyer cut the Ithaca lead to 3-2 shortly before halftime, his fourth goal of the year with 2:18 to go.
Andrews tied the game at 3-3 with 34 seconds left in the third quarter on a shot from 10 yards out, and the game remained all square heading into the final quarter of play.
Ithaca took a 4-3 lead on Brian DiBetta's goal with 13:14 to play in regulation, but the Dutchmen answered with three straight goals to take the lead for good.
With 11:19 to play, freshman attack
Rob Santangelo scored from in tight to tie the game at 4-4. Andrews scored his second of the game and fourth of the season at 9:52 to give the Dutchmen the lead.
Connors scored his 10
th of the year corralling a rebound off an Andrews shot that hit off the post and scoring with 4:38 to go in the fourth quarter.
Ithaca's James Manillla scored just 20 seconds later to cut the Union lead to 6-5 after a faceoff win by Matt Greenblatt set up a quick rush up the field.
In the final seconds, with Ithaca on a man-up opportunity, Aaron stopped Manilla's long-range shot to seal the win for the Dutchmen.
Union will open Liberty League play at home on Saturday against St. Lawrence in a game that begins at 12:00 p.m.
