ROCHESTER, NY -- With one game remaining in the regular season, the Union College women's lacrosse team is tied for first place in the Liberty League with a 7-1 record thanks to a 12-8 win at the University of Rochester at Fauver Stadium Friday.
Brittany Fraser and
Kat Egizi scored three goals each in the win over the Yellowjackets. Union is 7-6 overall while Rochester is 2-12 and 1-7 in league play.
With William Smith losing at RIT 15-9 on Friday to fall to 6-2 in the league, Union and RPI enter Saturday tied for first with 7-1 marks. If the Dutchwomen win at RIT Saturday in a 2 p.m. game, the Dutchwomen would clinch the top seed and host the Liberty League Tournament May 4-5 by virtue of a win over RPI earlier this season, 10-9 on April 13 (even if both Union and RPI win Saturday).
Heather Fraser and Emily McGrail scored twice each and the Dutchwomen got single goals by
Hilary Salander and Haley Gould. Kim Grinhaus made four saves in the Union net.
Rochester got three scores from Niki Holmes, and single tallies from Lauren Basil, Keegan Kennedy, Sarah Skinner, Lindsay Randall and Liza Maizel. Maddie Elia made nine saves for the Yellowjackets.
The Dutchwomen outshot the hosts, 23-16 and had a 22-13 ground ball advantage. Union also forced 16 turnovers and was 8 for 11 on clears while the Yellowjackets cleared 11 of 12 attempts.
Rochester had an early 2-0 lead with 24:29 left in the first half, but Egizi scored twice and Union later led 3-2 with 15:07 left. After a Randall score the Dutchwomen scored three straight for a 6-3 lead before the Yellowjackets tallied with just 30 seconds left in the half.
McGrail notched two scores to open the second half, and it was 8-4 with 26:44 left. But Rochester tallied twice to pull back to within two at 8-6 with 18:27 to play. Goals by
Heather Fraser and Gould provided a 10-6 cusion with 16:12 left, and the teams traded goals over the final 9:03,with Egizi closing out the scoring at 2:35 for the 12-6 final.
