The Dutchmen prevail in a 1-0 nailbiter

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sebastiaan Jansen scored the lone goal in the 80th minute on a penalty kick to give the Dutchmen an 1-0 victory over Cabrini College at College Park Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Union fell into foul trouble early as forwards Nick Vozzella and Jansen were issued yellow cards early in the match. Both teams played very aggressively and were not afraid of sustaining fouls for their respective teams. Jansen created the first goal scoring opportunity of the game when a through ball came his way. However, goalkeeper Eric Nowicki blocked a low shot to preserve the deadlock in the 26th minute.

The Cavaliers then was able to respond of a chance of their own moments later on a set piece in the right corner of Union's defense. Union had another opportunity to capture the lead before halftime on a set piece 40 yards out. Andrew Boehm was able to get his head on the ball but it flew beside the left post induce a Cavalier goal kick.

Offensively, both teams began to pick-up more chances in the second half. Jansen and Vozzella had multiple chances but could not find the mark. Brett Lockbaum and Kyle Johnson had opportunities as well but Carter was there to make the save. The tone of the game became more aggressive as time continued and more yellow cards were issued. Sahr Nyuma received one in the 58th minute while Cabrini's Boomer Steigelman and Don Irons were issued in 61stt and 71st minutes respectively.

Jansen was able to receive the ball in the left corner of the Cavalier defense in the 80th minute when he was fouled from behind, which drew the referee to issue a penalty kick. Jansen was chosen to take the kick as he rifled it by the fingertips of Nowicki to give Union the 1-0 advantage. Union had another scoring chance a minute later but Jansen shot the ball wide to the left. The Cavaliers were unable to test Carter in the final moments as Johnson's shot found Carter there to make his sixth save of the game. Union was able to possess the ball in the final moments to wind down the clock and ensure the 1-0 clean sheet.

Nowicki finished the day with six saves while Johnson ended with three shots, all on goal. Jansen had seven shots with three of them on target. The Dutchmen outshot the Cavaliers 18 to nine.

The Dutchmen will be in action September 8th  and 9th when they travel to North Adams, Mass. in the MCLA Tournament to take on Salve Regina and SUNY IT. Both weekend games will begin at noon.
