ONEONTA, N.Y. – After winning the first two games in the SUNY Oneonta Invitational, the Dutchwomen split the final two games to earn a third place finish Saturday afternoon.
In the match against the Saints of St. Scholastica, Union fell in straight sets, 20-25, 14-25 and 14-25.
Nora Wood led Union with seven kills while
Mackenzie Westfall produced 13 assists. Defensive Specialist,
Marissa Vollmer led all Dutchwomen with 10 digs in the defeat against the Saints. The loss then created the matchup for the third/fourth place game against Lewis & Clark.
The Dutchwomen bounced back from their defeat against the Saints and prevailed in a 3-2 victory against the Pioneers. Union was able to win the opening set 25-10. However, the Pioneers were able to come out on top of the next two sets in close fashion, which included a 28-30 loss and a 26-24 loss. The close losses did not affect the Dutchwomen, as they were able to put together two winning sets of 25-18 and 15-13 set to defeat Lewis & Clark from behind and earn the third place finish.
Rachel Wyman led Union for the day with 14 kills and
Kelley White with 11 kills. Westfall had a team-high 23 assists while Vollmer had 24 digs, also a team-high. Wood contributed to the winning cause with seven kills and 15 digs.
Vollmer was honored as she was selected to the SUNY Oneonta Invitational All-Tournament Team. In the four games played, she tallied a team-high 72 digs.
The Dutchwomen will be in action next at the Bomber Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. Their first opponents will be the Cavaliers of Cabrini College at 3:00 p.m. and the Knights of SUNY Geneseo at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8.
