SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior forward
Sebastiaan Jansen scored twice to lead the Union College men's soccer team (5-1) to a 2-0 win over SUNY New Paltz (2-2-1) at College Park.
Jansen, who leads the team with nine goals on the season, scored on a penalty kick midway through the first half, and added another early in the second half for his second consecutive two-goal game.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Carter made two saves in the contest, teaming with the defense for Union's third shutout of the season.
The Dutchmen applied early pressure in the contest, earning the game's first great scoring opportunity in the 17
th minute. Junior forward
Nick Vozzella nearly chipped the ball past SUNY New Paltz goalkeeper Andres Montova (three saves), but Montova made a diving save to keep the ball out of the net.
Union took an early lead in the 18
th minute, earning a penalty kick after a SUNY New Paltz foul in the box on a long throw in. Jansen scored with a shot into the left side of the net at 17:43 to put Union up 1-0.
SUNY New Paltz's Steven Browne nearly tied the game just minutes later, but his chance from six yards out went wide of the net in the 20
th minute.
Jansen nearly added his second of the half with a header off a free kick in the 39
th minute, but Montova came off the goal line to make the save.
SUNY New Paltz applied early pressure in the second half generating their best chance to even the game in the 55
th minute, but Carter made good save on a header by Mateo Cordini.
Just over three minutes later, Jansen added his second goal of the contest on a nice one-on-one move just inside the 18-yard box. Jansen received a long pass from senior defender
Alex Pack, cut to his left and fired a low shot past Montova to give Union a 2-0 lead at 58:19.
The Dutchmen held off SUNY New Paltz the rest of the way to earn their third straight victory. Union will host the Sage Colleges on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in its next contest.
