Three unanswered goals drop Dutchmen in conference opener

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Dutchmen squander an early lead as RIT scores three unanswered goals to give the Dutchmen their first home loss of the season in a 3-1 defeat at College Park Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers held the early advantage as RIT was able to generate chances early. Union struggled to maintain the ball as the RIT attack tested Ryan Carter right away. The sophomore goalie however did not budge as he stopped a couple of shots early in the first period. Eventually, the Dutchmen were able to regain momentum again and began to test the Tiger defense. On Union's first shot on net, the Liberty League leading scorer Sebastiaan Jansen scored his 10th goal on the season to put the Dutchmen up 1-0 in the 24th minute coming from a Jake Soodek pass.

The Tigers responded back with an equalizer quickly as RIT's Matt Broedel scored his second goal of the season 12 yards out from Andy Fleckenstein to make it 1-1. Union nearly captured the lead again as Nick Vozzella found himself alone with goalkeeper Sean Conway and successfully chipped the ball over the netminder. However, the ball struck the left post and was gathered by Conway.

Approximately five minutes later, the Tigers struck again as Sean Sullivan poked his first goal of the 2012 campaign after the ball found him through a mess of Dutchmen and Tigers player coming from a corner kick to give RIT the lead. Neither team could generate any other chances, as RIT was able to take the one-goal advantage into halftime.

RIT started where they left off as Danny Bloshkin gave the Tigers a two-goal cushion that was assisted by Danny Bloshkin. The Dutchmen attack continued to be inconsistent throughout the match as the Tiger defense limited the chances for Jansen and the supporting cast to gain shots on net. Defensively, Carter kept the Dutchmen in the game making several saves to keep the deficit at two. Union was looking to be within one goal with under 10 minutes left as Dean Constant fed the ball across the RIT penalty box to Carl Faber but could not connect with the shot. The Tigers were able to hold on to the final whistle to open the conference schedule with a win on the road.

Union was outshot by the Tigers 19-10 in the game and the Tigers gained more corners with a 10-4 advantage. Carter had nine saves on the match, was given the loss while Conway earns the win, and stopped four shots in the game.

The Dutchmen will be looking to rebound as the Dutchmen travel to Nazareth College next on September 25 while RIT will be paired with conference foe Skidmore at home on September 28.
