ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Will Poetzsch scores the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the Dutchmen over the The Golden Flyers 3-2 Tuesday night.
Union rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring twice in the last 10 minutes of regulation play with goals from
Sam Hunter and
Sebastiaan Jansen and getting winning goal in the second overtime period. Union's
Will Poetzsch scored his first goal of the season in the 107th minute to win the game for the Dutchmen.
In the first half, Nazareth was controlling the offensive play with eight shots to Union's four. There were many scoring opportunities for the Golden Flyers, including the goal by junior Luke Elston in the 24th minute of play. A Dutchmen defender received a pass back from the midfield, then Elston was able to stick a foot in and break it up. After stripping the Union defenders, Elston was able to beat the goalkeeper
Ryan Carter on a low slotted shot. The goal was the eighth of the season for Elston.
Going in the second half the Golden Flyers were up by one until Nazareth was awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out. Junior James Wheeler stepped up to take the kick, resulting in a goal to put the Golden Flyers up by two in the 71st minute of play. Only ten minutes later, Union's
Sam Hunter scored off an assist from
Kevin Janson. Another six minutes later the Dutchmen scored again when
Nick Vozzella passed the ball to
Sebastiaan Jansen, who fired the ball under the crossbar, forcing the game into overtime. In the second period of overtime, the Dutchmens last goal game from
Will Poetzsch assisted by Vozzella.
The Dutchmen will return home to play SUNY Canton Saturday at College Park beginning at 2:00 p.m. Nazareth will be looking for a conference win as they host Stevens Tech Saturday at 1 p.m.
