Volleyball splits Liberty League games at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Volleyball split their trip to Skidmore as the Dutchwomen drop their first game to the Brewers 0-3 but defeat the Saints 3-1 Friday evening.

In the match against Vassar, the Dutchwomen could not keep pace with the Brewers as Union fell in three sets (21-25, 14-25, 11-25).

Nora Wood and Lauren Woods led the Dutchwomen with five kills apiece. Defensively, Marissa Vollmer paced the team in digs with 11. Mackenzie Westfall had 14 assists in the losing effort.

Vassar's attack was a balanced effort spearheaded by Taylor Mosely and Clara Carrillo with seven kills each. Hilary Koenigs was instrumental in the Brewer's offense with a game-high 28 assists. Union faced a stingy defense as Vassar tallied 10 block assists in the win as well as 18 digs, nine of them from Chloe Hallum.

Against the Saints, the Dutchwomen were able to rebound as they defeated the Saints 3-1 (25-10, 25-27, 26-24, 25-13).

Freshman Kelley White had her best game of the season as she paced the attack with 16 kills. Fellow freshman Rachel Wyman had 15 kills of her own including three service aces. Rajpreet Dhaliwal was flawless in her attack as she was the only hitter that did not commit an error as she struck seven kills in the win. Westfall continued to orchestrate the offense with 40 assists. Defensively, the Dutchwomen were well rounded as three players hit double-digits in gigs. Vollmer paced the defensive unit with 26 digs while Westfall and White tallied 11 and 10 respectively. As a team, the Dutchwomen harassed the Saints attack with 14 block assists with Woods leading the team with four of the 14 and a solo block of her own.

Union now improves to 11-5 on the season and snaps a three-game skid. In addition, the Dutchwomen earn their first Liberty League win and have a 1-2 record. Vassar improves to 9-3 and are 5-1 in conference play. St. Lawrence drops to 6-13 and 1-4 in Liberty League play.

The Dutchwomen will return to the Viniar Athletic Center tomorrow as they take on Liberty League members Bard and Clarkson. Bard (3-11, 0-6) will be seeking their first conference win while Clarkson (15-3, 5-0) comes into the match with an 11-game winning streak and are at the top of the Liberty League standings.
