SCHENECTADY, NY – The Dutchwomen were able to defeat Bard in straight sets their first match but dropped their second match to Clarkson in straight sets at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
The Dutchwomen were up early in the first set with an 8-3 lead. Union was sharp in their attack early as Bard trailed 12-3 which was sparked by a 4-0 run. The Raptors quickly gained focus as they tried to close the deficit with a run of their own. Union finally stopped the 7-1 streak by the Raptors with a kill by
Rajpreet Dhaliwal to make it 15-10. The Dutchwomen attack began to rebuild their cushion to eight as Bard took their first time out.
Rachel Wyman and Dhaliwal did not let up as Bard took their second timeout as the Hawks trailed by 10. Each team exchanged points as the Dutchwomen were able to close out set one 25-12.
Union continued to apply the pressure as the Dutchwomen built a 9-3 lead in the second set. A well-rounded effort by the Dutchwomen stringed together an 8-1 run to give Union a 17-4 lead. Bard's Mai Aurell-Foulser and Lexi Cooper stood out throughout the match but Bard could not keep pace as Union finished the second set 25-9.
Bard took their first lead of the match as they opened up a 4-3 lead. Union managed to regain the lead with a slight 9-7 advantage. Cara Chalk stopped the 4-0 Dutchwomen run as Union padded their lead through the third set. Bard battled back as the Raptors closed the deficit to three at 19-16. However, the Dutchwomen were able to finish the game on a 6-2 to take the final set 25-18.
Wyman led the Dutchwomen in kills with 14 while
Mackenzie Westfall dished out 22 assists.
Marissa Vollmer paced the team in digs with seven. Union as a whole posted 12 service aces in the win.
Against Clarkson, the Dutchwomen were swept by the Golden Knights in straight sets (21-25, 18-25, 18-25). Wyman and White paced Union in kills with 10 and seven respectively. Westfall controlled the offense with 20 assists while Vollmer led the defense with 28 digs.
Kirstie Shurie produced a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs as Clarkson had 44 kills and only seven errors on offense in the match. Defensively, Erika Chin produced 16 more digs while Kristen Orlandini pitched in with four aces.
The Dutchwomen stand at 12-6 on the year and 2-4 in Liberty League play. Clarkson remains unblemished in conference play with a 7-0 record and 17-3 overall. The Golden Knights now have a 13 game-winning streak while Bard falls to 3-13 on the season.
Volleyball will be back in action Tuesday October 2, as the Dutchwomen will host Williams College beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
