SCHENECTADY, NY –
Junior forward Melissa Mansfield scored on a corner kick feed from senior forward Jennifer Mansfield to help the Union College women's soccer team (3-0) earn a 2-1 double overtime victory in its home opener against No. 24 SUNY New Paltz (2-1).

On its first chance of the second extra frame, Jennifer Mansfield's cross from the corner bounced off of Melissa Mansfield's back and into the top netting at 102:33, giving the Dutchwomen their third straight victory to open up the 2012 season.

Union held a 1-0 lead in the second half, but New Paltz carried the play after halftime, finally breaking through for the equalizer in the 65th minute.

On a counterattack, Samantha Abravanel took the ball into space down the right wing and fired a cross to senior midfielder Beth Bowling, who was wide open inside the 18 yard box. Bowling beat Union goalkeeper Kayla Marti (7 saves) with a low shot to tie the game at 1-1 at 64:02.

The Hawks had the best opportunity in the first overtime frame, as Marti came up with a stop on Sarah Painter's curling shot from 20 yards away in the 92nd minute.

Union carried the play in the first half, generating nine shots, most from inside the 18-yard box. Junior Melissa Scinto had the first chance of the game for the Dutchwomen in 19th minute. Sophomore midfielder Whitney Bickford's initial blocked shot bounced right to Scinto, who fired off the crossbar from straightaway.

Union would take the lead later in the half, as two substitutions made an immediate impact in the game. Junior midfielder Nicole Collins (entered the game in the 38th minute) took a pass in space down the left side and sent a cross to Laura Snowden (entered in the 29th minute), who was positioned in space just outside the six yard box.

Snowden fired a low shot that deflected off the hand of New Paltz goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (seven saves) and into the side netting at 39:11 to give the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead at the half.

Union held a 17-13 shot advantage for the game, including a 9-8 margin on shots on goal.

The Dutchwomen will host Endicott College at College Park in the opening game of the Union Invitational on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
