SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior guard/forward Sarah Wetmore hit a three pointer at the buzzer to lift RPI to a 66-63 women's basketball victory at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Engineers now stand 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League while the Dutchwomen fell to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Wetmore's three at the top of the key was the first time that RPI had taken the lead in the game. The Engineers came back from a nine point halftime deficit and a 10 point second half deficit. Wetmore finished with a double double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Ashley Clough had 14 points and eight rebounds. Kelly Piotrowski scored nine and joined Amanda Lynch with five rebounds each. RPI shot 32% for the game.
Union was led by
Kate Thompson, who recorded her third double double of the season and fourth of her career with 20 points and a game high 11 rebounds.
Brittney Kenney scored 18 with six assists and seven rebounds and
Kelsey McDonald had nine boards and six assists. The nine rebounds were a career high for McDonald. Union outrebounded RPI, 49-45 and shot 39%.
The Dutchwomen led 37-28 at the half. In the second half they led 42-32 4:50 in on a layup by Thompson, and had a 46-36 lead with 11:12 left after two free throws by
Meghan Erdman. Union took a nine point lead at 4:39 on a jumper by Kenney, and led by seven with 2:59 left on the first free throw by Kenney. But Bailei Tetrault hit a jumper at 2:30 for a five point deficit and Ashley Clough followed up after a steal with a three pointer to make it 63-61 Union with 1:21 left. A fould put Wetmore at the line and she tied the game with her two shots from the charity stripe, 63-63 with 26 seconds left. The Dutchwomen took a shot that was rebounded by the Engineers and Wetmore took the three pointer just before the buzzer and it went in as time expired.
Union is at Sage Colleges Tuesday for a non-league game.
