SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore forward Chloe Hayter posted a double double with game highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the William Smith women's basketball squad to a 70-53 Liberty League victory over host Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Herons, 10-6 overall, are now 4-3 in league play while the Dutchwomen fell to 10-7 for the season and 5-4 in league action.
Willaim Smith outscored Union 34-20 in the second half. Erin O'Brien scored 14 points with six assists and five rebounds and Sydni Salvatore had 10 points with six boards and four assists. Sasha Borenstein added 10 points for the Herons, who outrebounded the Dutchwomen, 43-32 and shot 46% for the night.
Kelsey McDonald led Union with 19 points and six assists.
Brittney Kenney (nine points) and
Kate Thompson (seven points) each led the work off the glass with seven rebounds.
Amy Loya added seven points for Union, which hit from 37% from the floor.
William Smith took a 36-33 lead into halftime. Borenstein hit a three pointer with one second left in the first 20 minutes to break the tie. The game had seven lead changes in the first half. Union pulled to within one at 42-41 when
Brittney Kenney's free throw completed a three point play with 16:16 left in the second half. But William Smith went on a 14-0 run in the next 6:19 for a 56-41 advatange. Molly Breen had three points and a block and Hayter had four points and Borenstein hit for a three during the run. William Smith got up by as many as 25 (70-45 with 4:43 left).
Union returns to action Friday night when the Dutchwomen host league leader and undefeated St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. The next day, the Dutchwomen continue league play at Skidmore at 2 p.m.
