Mason, Winney help pace Dutchmen at Skidmore, 82-75


SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY --  Union College scored 23 second chance points in an 82-75 Liberty League win over Skidmore College in front of a standing room only crowd at the Williamson Center.
 
The loss snaps a six-game win streak for the Thoroughbreds who are 7-3 in Liberty League play and 13-6 overall. The Dutchmen improve to 8-2 and 16-3 and earn the season split with Skidmore.
 
Connor Merrill led the four Thoroughbreds in double figures with 22 points and six blocks.  Aldin Medunjanin scored 19 to go along with five assists and six rebounds, while Sakhile hit for 15 points off the bench. Tanner Brooks finished with 12 points.
 
Union's Joe Mason led all scorers with 24 points. He also had 12 rebounds, and four assists.  Terell Winney was 8-10 from the floor for 20 points and Kevin Donohue contributed 18 points. Evan Croll scored 10 points and had four assists.
 
The Dutchmen grabbed an early 19-9 lead, before the Thoroughbreds worked their way back in it with a 10-2 run to get within two, 21-19 with 11:25 to play. Brian Moore capped the run with a deep three.  Skidmore eventually took the lead for the first time, 26-25 on a Medunjanin layup with 6:48 to play in the half.  The teams would exchange leads three times before the Thoroughbreds took a 39-36 edge into the break.
 
Union regained the lead at the 16:00 mark of the second half, 47-46 on a three-pointer by Terell Winney.  The teams traded baskets and the lead with the Dutchmen going in front for good, 49-48, on a Joe Mason jumper with 14:29 to play.
 
Union led by 10, 76-66 with 1:58 to play. The Thoroughbreds battled to keep it close, getting to within four, 79-75 on a put-back from Merrill with 26 seconds left.  Mason would go 3-4 from the line the rest of the way for the 82-75 final.
 
The Dutchmen out rebounded Skidmore 38-28 and scored 23 points off 14 offensive boards.
 
Union will host RIT on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m.
