Donohue scores 37 as Union goes to 17-3 after 72-55 win vs. RIT

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior forward and co-captain Keven Donohue scored a career high 37 points and senior guard and co-captain Joe Mason had 10 rebounds as the Union College men's basketball team improved to 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the Liberty League with a 72-55 home win over the Rochester Institute of Technology Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Tigers fell to 6-12 for the season and 2-7 in league play.

Donohue, who had 21 points and was seven of eight from the floor in the first half, made 13 of 18 shots and also had a season best five blocks with three steals and four rebounds. He moved into seventh all-time in Union career scoring annals with 1,386 points, and is 12 behind sixth place Joe Wood '84 (1,398). It was Donohue's second 30 point game this season and eighth game with 20 or more points. Union is 17-3 for the first time since the 1975-76 team started 18-3.

The 37 point total was the most by a Dutchman since Aaron Galletta '02  had 41 & 45 points in games in his senior season of 2001-12. He had 45 vs. Cazenovia in Las Vegas on December 19, 2001 and scored 41 home vs. Haverford on November 24, 2001.

Mason had all 10 of his rebounds on the defensive end and also had nine assists and seven steals. Evan Croll added seven points for the Dutchmen, who shot 49% for the game including a 56% mark from the floor in the second half.

Jameel Balenton led RIT with 22 points and eight rebounds, both team highs. J.P. Reagan scored 15 and Nick Dobson added five rebounds for the Tigers, who shot 33% but outrebounded the Dutchmen, 39-34.

RIT jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led 12-5 with 11:08 left in the first half. The game was tied at 24-24 with 4:49 left but the Dutchmen closed out the half with an 11-2 run for a 35-26 lead into the break.

With Union up 44-36 with 15:30 left in the second half after a layup by Eric Travis, the Dutchmen went on a 12-4 run over the next 6:05 for a 56-40 lead. Union's largest lead was the final when William Hython made a layup with 20 seconds remaining.

The Dutchmen are idle this weekend and now face four straight road games beginning on February 5 at Hobart.
