McDonald, Kenney lead Dutchwomen to 70-52 win over RIT



SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior forward Brittney Kenney posted a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and junior guard Kelsey McDonald had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 70-52 Liberty League victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology Tuesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.

The Dutchwomen improved to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in league play while the Tigers fell to 5-12 overall and 2-7 in the league.

Kenney posted her second double double of the season and also had seven assists. McDonald dished out six assists for the  Dutchwomen, while Shayla Madden scored 11 points with five rebounds. Kristin Schmidt also had five boards for the hosts, who shot 39% and forced 17 turnovers. Union dominated on the boards, outrebounding RIT, 43-32.

Four players scored in double figures for the Tigers, led by Leslie Havens and Mallory Apperson with 11 points each and Kayla Wheeler and Jess Kramer with 10 points each. Havens had a team best eight rebounds and Brienna McLean had a game high eight assists for the Tigers, who shot 38%.

Union led by as many as 20 in the first half and took a 17 point lead into the locker room at the half, 39-22. Madden had nine of those points. Union led by 19 at 43-24 with 17:11 left but the Tigers went on a 17-2 run to pull as close as four at 45-41 with 9:43 left. It was 48-44 with 9:21 to play for Union, and then the Dutchwomen went on a 12-5 run for a 60-49 lead with 3:23 left capped by a Kenney three pointer. Union went on a 10-0 run the rest of the way.

The Dutchwomen are idle this weekend then return to action at Clarkson on February 8, the first of three straight road games.
