SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women's hockey team fell to the Northeastern Huskies 2-1 after a last minute third period goal broke the 1-1 deadlock. With the win the Huskies improve to 2-1 on the season while the Dutchwomen fall to 2-2.
The Dutchwomen opened the game firing. Sophomore
Jessica Kaminsky tallied her first goal of the season just 1:18 into the first period. Kaminsky fired a shot off a rebound that bounced to the slot to beat Northeastern goaltender Chloe Desjardins. The Dutchwomen's early goal was assisted by senior captain defenseman
Maddy Norton and sophomore
Kathryn Tomaselli.
With the momentum the Dutchwomen drew a penalty just 13 seconds later but couldn't beat Dejardins again. Desjardins and Union junior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg each stopped 10 shots following the early goal to keep the score 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
The second period saw both teams fail to convert on power play opportunities. The Dutchwomen managed six shots against Desjardins while the Huskies forced Lundberg to make 10 stops to bring her game total to 20 through the first two periods.
The beginning of the third period started in the same fashion as the second period ended. Both teams traded scoring opportunities before the Dutchwomen finally gained a power play opportunity 8:26 into the period.
After a few Union shots, the Huskies cleared the puck out of the zone and chased the puck down the center of the ice, forcing a shot on the Union net. After a scramble in front the puck found the back of the net. The goal was immediately reviewed and after much deliberation amongst the referees the goal was confirmed. Kelly Wallace received credit for the game-tying goal and Paige Savage received the primary assist.
After more back and forth action down the stretch the Huskies drew the final blow as Maggie DiMasi redirected a feed from Claire Santostefano with just 55 seconds remaining in the third period. Junior Colleen Murphy also recorded an assist on the Huskies game-winning goal.
Lundberg held the Dutchwomen in the entire game after turning away 28 shots. Desjardins finished the game with 23 saves.
The Dutchwomen were 0-3 on the power play which marks the first time they have failed to convert on there power plays this year. The Dutchwomen also held the Huskies scoreless on their two power play attempts.
The Dutchwomen return to action tomorrow when they welcome Boston University to the confines of Messa Rink. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
