Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Lundberg shines as Dutchwomen fall in OT to #7 BU

SCHENECTADY, NY- Union College women's hockey team junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg stopped 45 shots in a 3-2 loss to seventh ranked Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. The Dutchwomen played the nationally ranked Terriers into overtime but came up just short of the upset after BU forward Rebecca Russo tallied a game-winning goal 3:13 into the overtime session.

Lundberg made 18 stops in the third period against a Terrier attack that made it to the national championship just a season ago. Lundberg's 45 stops was a career high and the first time she made 40+ stops this season.

BU got the early lead in the first period when Rebecca Russo fired a shot past Lundberg from the top of the slot after she received a feed from Jordan Juron. Junior Caroline Campbell added the secondary assist on the goal that was scored at the 10:59 mark.

Union answered the BU goal just seven minutes later when junior forward Christine Valente knocked in a rebound off her own shot from the slot. The game remained tied through the end of the second period as the Dutchwomen were held in the contest by Lundberg, who stopped all 13 shots she faced.

The Terriers nearly regained the lead in the third period when Russo hit the crossbar and the puck stayed out of the net. The play went to review, but the call was upheld and the game remained deadlocked at one.

Sophomore Rebecca Babiak capitalized on a rebound chance between the circles at the 7:01 mark of the frame to give the Dutchwomen the lead in the third period. The rebound came off the shot from sophomore Jamie Smith. Junior Bryanne Panchuk also assisted on the play that gave the Dutchwomen the lead.

The Dutchwomen held the lead until the final minute, when the Terriers pulled their goaltender and added the extra skater. Terrier captain Louise Warren tapped in a rebound with 32 seconds remaining in the game to force overtime.

Lundberg would make three huge stops in overtime before Russo would add her second goal of the game for the game winner.

The Dutchwomen look to get back on the winning track when they travel to Penn State next weekend. Union captured two wins against the Nittany Lions a season ago. The two game series kicks off on Friday Oct. 18 at 7 pm and is followed by a 2 pm matchup on Saturday Oct. 19.
