Women's Soccer Downs Castleton State, 3-1

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Coach Brian Speck has been waiting for his team to break out offensively all season. The wait is finally over.

Union produced its highest scoring output of the year with a 3-1 win over Castleton State in non-league action. Union, which entered the match with 10 goals on the season -- and just five in its last eight games -- proved every bit offensive-minded as the visiting Spartans, who were averaging 3.7 goals per game this fall.

Union's spark came from forward Breana Derella, who scored early in the first half on a shot from 10 yards out, then followed in the 50th minute with a bending corner kick that snuck inside the near post. Derella is now the team's leading scorer with four goals.

The Dutchwomen applied steady pressure during the first half, producing four corner kicks in less than two minutes just before halftime. On the night, Union finished with a 19-14 advantage in total shots, and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.

Castleton State (10-5-0) closed the gap at 58:45 when freshman Dominique Valancius sprinted 40 yard with the ball on her foot, then launched a low shot that eluded goalkeeper Allison Brustowicz. The goal was Valancius' 14th of the season.

The Garnet and White put the game away with 13 minutes left on a scoring play that started with Mollie Gilchrist's crossing pass from along the endline to an open Whitney Bickford in the box. Bickford buried the pass for her first goal of the year.

Union (7-4-0), still unbeaten at College Park Field this season (5-0), continues its three-game homestand this Wednesday with a 7 p.m. start against Hartwick.
