SCHENECTADY, NY -- In a game featuring plenty of offense, Union suffered a 6-5 overtime defeat to Lake Superior State at Messa Rink. The loss was Union's first of the season and marked the first time the team had surrendered six goals at home since October, 2009.
Stephen Perfetto scored the game-winner 1:16 into overtime, launching a shot from along the boards that eluded goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulo blocker side. It was the only shot on goal in the extra period. Perfetto finished with four points, joining teammate Alex Globke with three assists on the night as the Lakers (3-0-0) made the most of their first visit ever to the Achillies Center.
Union took four leads in the game, only to see Lake Superior answer each time. And when the Lakers finally did gain the edge -- on Andrew Dommett's third period power play goal --
Shayne Gostisbehere answered for Union to force overtime.
The Garnet and White finished with a 34-23 advantage in shots, posting double figures in each period, including a game-high 14 shots in the middle frame.
The Dutchmen distributed goals among five players, including freshman
Michael Pontarelli who already has a team-best three goals on the season.
Daniel Ciampini opened the scoring just one minute after the opening whistle. Mike Veccione also added a goal. Senior
Kevin Sullivan contributed with three assists (giving him seven this season) while
Daniel Carr had a pair of helpers.
Union (1-1-1) and Lake Superior square off again tomorrow night in Schenectady with a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
