SPRINGFIELD, MA – Andrew Walz caught a 25 yard pass from John Krafick in the second overtime possession to lift Western New England to a 33-30 victory over Union College Saturday afternoon. Both teams are now 2-4 after the non-league contest.
Union's
Darnel Thomas tied the game at 20-20 with a three yard run with 6:26 remaining in regulation. Kevin Cook scored on a nine yard run on the first possession of OT and Thomas scored on a one yard run in the "bottom" of that possession. Union's
David Pope booted a 28 yard field goal to give Union a 30-27 lead in the second possession, but Krafick hit Walz on the first play of WPI's second possession for the triumph.
Thomas finished with career highs of 25 carries, 165 yards and three rushing touchdowns for the Dutchmen. It was his second 100 yard game this season. QB
Connor Eck was 11 for 21 with two interceptions and 134 yards, and
Brian Havlicek had five catches for 51 yards while
Tosin Kazeem had three for 48 yards.
Casey Muse recorded a career and (tied for) game high 16 tackles including two for losses and a 19 yard sack.
Thomas Hayes and
Chris Carbone posted 12 tackles each.
Krafick was 21 for 32 for 302 yards and two touchdowns, while his top target Walz had 183 yards on 10 catches and two scores. Adam Dunne added 58 yards on three receptions. Nathan Fleming matches Muse with the game high 16 tackles with a sack and Kyle Jones stopped 11.
Thomas opened the scoring with 3:57 left in the first with a 45 yard run on the second play of a two play, 52 yard drive. Krafick scored on a five yard keeper just 1:51 into the second quarter on a drive that featured 12 plays, 3:20 and started at the WPI 5 yard line. But Union got field goals from Pope with a 28 yarder with 8:33 left in the half and a 26 yard score with 2:31 remaining and it was 13-7 at the half. The first Pope field goal wrapped up a nine play, 38 yard drive in 4:36, and 4:23 was consumed on a 13 play, 66 yard drive.
Walz caught a seven yard pass from Krafick with just 2:14 left in the third and the game was knotted at 13-13. Kevin Cook's five yard run with 9:47 remaining in regulation featured a nine play, 67 yard drive in 3:03, and WPI had a 20-13 lead until over three minutes later when Thomas had his game tying score.
Union, which had 224 yards rushing, held the Golden Bears to 97 on the ground, the fourth time this season an opponent had less than 100 yards rushing. Union finished with 402 yards in total offense to WPI's 401.
The Dutchmen are back on the road next week, heading west to face the University of Rochester in a Liberty League game at 12:05 p.m. on Saturday, October 26.
