CANTON, NY -- St. Lawrence sophomore Christian Yarros' first career goal came with 1:28 left in regulation and lifted the nationally-ranked #20 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Union on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field. The Saints, who improve to 7-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the Liberty League, handed the Dutchmen their first loss of the season, as Union falls to 9-1-1 and 2-1 in the conference.
St. Lawrence set up a corner kick with 1:45 remaining in the second half. Morgan Smith launched a corner kick to the middle of the box, then Rob Brandell headed a shot toward net that was blocked by the Union defense. Several defenders attempted to clear the ball before Yarros slid in from the right side and toed a shot past Dutchmen goalkeeper
Ryan Carter, giving St. Lawrence the lone goal of the game.
Both teams had trouble finding the net throughout the contest as there were just five shots on goal the whole game, and none in the opening half. It took 15:06 minutes for a shot to be taken, with Union having its first and arguably only solid opportunity to score in the first half.
St. Lawrence held a 14-4 advantage in shots, while the teams took four corner kicks apiece. Costello earned his seventh shutout of the year in stopping both of the shots he faced. Meanwhile, Carter suffers his first loss of the season in a two-save effort.
Union will travel to Troy, NY on Wednesday to take on the Engineers of RPI at 7:00 p.m.
