Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

RPI slips past Dutchmen 1-0

TROY, NY – The Union College men's soccer team fell to RPI 1-0  this evening in Liberty League action at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-4 overall (3-1 Liberty), while the Dutchmen drop to 9-2-1 (2-2 Liberty).

Engineers forward Tim Terrezza broke a scoreless tie in the 83rd minute, after a free kick from the right flank was headed off the crossbar by classmate Matt Koziol. The ball ricocheted back into play for Terrezza who leaped and nodded in the eventual game-winner. The tally was his second in as many games.

Union's lone opportunity following the RPI goal came in the 88th minute, when junior Will Poetzsch's attempt from 25 yards was blocked by the Rensselaer defense.

The Engineers had two quality scoring chances in the opening stanza, including a rocket of a shot by midfielder Tyler Kessler in the 30th minute. Kessler's try was sent towards the right side of the net, before Union junior goalkeeper Ryan Carter got horizontal to make the fingertip save.

Eight minutes later, RPI midfieler Matt Carberry settled a cross from the left in the center of the penalty area, before ripping a half volley over the top of the net.

Rensselaer held a 5-2 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes, including a 1-0 edge in shots on goal.

Koziol nearly put the hosts on top in the 58th minute, when he headed a corner kick service from forward Joey Eilert a few feet wide of the right post.

RPI junior captain and goalie Rob Dewald  finished with two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season, while Carter stopped two shots for the Dutchmen.

The Dutchmen are back in action on Saturday when they host Hobart for a 2pm matchup at College Park field.
