SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women's hockey team split their home series with Providence after falling 6-2 at Messa Rink on Saturday afternoon. Freshman defenseman
Kathryn Davis picked up her first career goal in the contest.
The Friars opened up the scoring in the first period when they capitalized on a Union penalty and scored a power-play goal at 15:03 of the period. Molly Illikainen tipped a shot taken by Maggie Pendleton for her first goal and point of the season to give the Friars a 1-0 lead. Providence added another goal just 53 seconds later when Victoria Virtue ripped a shot past junior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg.
Davis brought the Dutchwomen within one tally when she fired a shot that found the back of the net through a sea of defenders. The power play goal was Davis' first career goal and came off the sticks of senior captain
Maddy Norton and sophomore
Courtney Turner. The Friars would add the final tally of the first period when Cassidy Carels picked up her first goal of the game at the 18:27 mark of the first period.
The Friars would stretch the lead to three halfway through the second period when Carels added her second goal of the game off the sticks of Rebecca Morse and Liv Halvorson. The Dutchwomen would answer five minutes later when sophomore
Kathryn Tomaselli picked up her second goal of the season on a feed from Turner who registered her second assist of the game. Sophomore forward
Jessica Kaminsky also registered an assist on the Dutchwomen's second goal. The period would end with Union trailing by two goals.
Providence would tack on two more goals in the third period, including an empty-net, shorthanded goal as the Dutchwomen attempted late comeback. Molly Illikainen and Beth Hanrahan registered the two third period goals for the Friars.
Lundberg made 20 saves on 24 shots in two periods before sophomore
Madeleine Dahl saw her first action of the season in the third period. Dahl allowed one goal on eight shots in her season debut.
The Dutchwomen power play registered a goal for a third straight game. Union was 1-4 on the power play to bring their season average to .286.
The Dutchwomen will remain at home next week for Union homecoming weekend when they host Northeastern on Friday October 11 at 3:30 pm and Boston University on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
