WEST HARTFORD, CT – Madeline Granato scored a team high 15 points and
Kristin Schmidt pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 51-46 victory over SUNY Purchase at the St. Joseph Tournament Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams.
Union plays in the championship game tomorrow afternoon.
Amy Loya and
Natalie Leone scored seven each for the Dutchwomen, while Loya also had five boards.
Kelsey McDonald posted a game high six steals and Union was outrebounded 40-37 but forced 32 turnovers.
Jazmin Garcia posted a double double with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Purchase, while Jeidar Cole cored 10 and Jessica Bullock had five boards and five steals. Purchase shot 34%.
Purchase led 25-21 at halftime and led by three with 17:17 left, 27-24. But Union went on a 13-1 run for a 37-28 lead with 10:02 left, featuring three points from Leone and the three pointer by Granato for that nine point lead. It was tied at 44-44 left but Union pulled away featuring another Granato three.
