McDonald MVP as Dutchwomen win St. Joseph Tournament, 76-73 in OT



WEST HARTFORD, CT – Tournament MVP Kelsey McDonald had team-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 76-73 overtime win over the Univ. of St. Joseph in the championship game of the 16th Annual USJ Blue Jay Tip-Off tournament at the O'Connell Center. Union improved to 2-0 while St. Joseph dropped to 1-1.

Union came back from an 11-point deficit at 59-48 with 4:54 to play in regulation. The Dutchwomen pulled within 68-66 on two free throws by McDonald with 37 seconds left and after a steal by McDonald had a chance to lead but there was a missed three-pointer with 17 seconds left. Natalie Leone, however, got an offensive rebound and was rewarded when she took a cross-court pass from Cailin Schmeer and drilled an 18-footer with 2.4 seconds remaining.

St. Joseph managed a desperation shot at the buzzer that fell short. Amy Loya had a layup 25 seconds into overtime and another with 3:32 to play that broke a 70-all tie and gave the Dutchwomen the lead for good.

Loya scored 15 points and Brittney Kenney 12 for Union. Devon Diliberto scored a game-high 27 points for St. Joseph. Heather Framski (Beacon Fallls, Conn.) scored 20 for the Blue Jays and Mary Hyde had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Union had 76 field goal attempts to just 49 for USJ as the Dutchwomen outrebounded the Blue Jays, 56-35. Union scored 29 second-chance points on 30 offensive rebounds.

Loya and Diliberto also made the All-Tournament team as did Jannel Paul of Morrisville State and Jazmin Garcia of Purchase.

Union is idle until November 26 when the Dutchwomen host Hartwick at 6 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
