SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College women's hockey senior captain
Maddy Norton's last-minute goal fueled a 2-1 victory over Brown on Friday afternoon at Messa Rink. With the win the Dutchwomen improve to 5-8-0 and 2-3-0 in ECAC play while the Bears drop to 1-5-1 and 0-4-1 in ECAC play.
With the clock winding down in the third period, Norton received a feed from junior defenseman
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine. After corralling the pass, Norton fired a high shot through a screen being applied by senior forward
Stefanie Thomson, to beat the goalie blocker-side. Junior forward
Christine Valente also tallied an assist on the play after feeding Tancrell-Fontaine from the far wall.
Junior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg held the Bears attack to the one goal on her way to earning her fifth victory of the season. She tallied 12 saves in the game and shut down four Brown power plays.
The Dutchwomen's come-from-behind win started with an early second period tally from sophomore
Kathryn Tomaselli. Tomaselli received a pass from behind Thomson and fired a shot through the five hole of Brown goaltender Aubree Moore. Tomaselli's fifth tally of the season puts her in sole possession of first place in goal scoring among the Dutchwomen. Senior forward
Mac Purvis also registered her first assist of the season on the Tomaselli tally.
The Dutchwomen fell behind halfway through the first period when Bears forward Erin Conway received a pass from linemate Sarah Robson that she buried past Lundberg. The goal, which came at the 13:09 of the opening stanza, would be the only time the Bears could break through against Lundberg.
The Dutchwomen outshot the Bears 17-13 in the game, including a team-leading five shots from sophomore forward
Jessica Kaminsky. The Dutchwomen also controlled the faceoff circle, winning 23 of the 38 draws in the game. Valente, who normally plays on the wing, led the Dutchwomen with nine wins. This marks the first time the Dutchwomen have won both the faceoff and shot battles.
The Dutchwomen played solidly defensively as they blocked 14 Bear shot attempts. Norton led the way with four blocks.
Moore finished the game with 15 saves for the Bears on her way to falling to a record of 1-5-1.
The Dutchwomen look to get even in league play tomorrow when they welcome Yale to the confines of Messa Rink for a 4 p.m. matchup.
