Dutchwomen lose home opener to Hartwick, 71-55



SCHENECTADY, NY – Maria Foglia scored 26 points with four assists to lead Hartwick College to a 71-55 non-league women's basketball win at Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Hawks remained perfect at 5-0 while the Dutchwomen lost for the first time this season and is 2-1.

Brittney Dumas scored 12 points with eight rebounds for Hartwick, while Kate Purcell and Kait Veit added four assists each. The Hawks shot 49% for the game and outrebounded the hosts, 30-29. The Hawks took 22 three point attempts, and made nine for a 41% shooting mark.

Union was led by Amy Loya's 10 points and four rebounds, and six other players scored six points each for the Dutchwomen. Kelsey McDonald had four assists. The Dutchwomen shot 46% for the game in the balanced effort as Kristin Schmidt, Brittney Kenney, Madeline Granato, Erin Lyons, Kate Thompson and McDonald had six points each. Union shot 61% in the second half, making 11 of 18 shots.

Hartwick had a 37-20 lead at halftime. The Hawk led by 18 at 42-24 1:51 into the second half, but the Dutchwomen went on a 12-1 run to pull to within seven at 43-36 in a span of 7:40. During that run, Union's Kenney and Loya had four points each. It was a nine point game with 8:20 left at 50-41, but Hartwick had a 19-9 run over the next 6:17 featuring 10 points from Foglia. The Union bench outscored the Hartwick reserves, 21-15 on the night.

Union returns to action at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Invitational in Rochester, hosted by St. John Fisher, this weekend. The Dutchwomen face Ramapo Saturday at 4 p.m., with the consolation at noon or the championship at 2 p.m. Sunday vs. John Jay or the host school.
