Hartwick downs Dutchmen in home opener, 76-65



SCHENECTADY, NY -- Jared Suderly led all players with 22 points and nine rebounds as Hartwick defeated Union, 76-65 at the Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Hawks are now 3-2 on the young season while the Dutchmen stand 0-3.

Joey Lufkin scored 16 and Matt Wilson pulled down eight rebounds with 14 points. Kyle Bradley boosted the Hartwick effort with nine points and seven rebounds along with four assists. The Hawks shot 49% anbd held Union to 33% shooting.

Terell Winney led all Dutchmen with 19 points and William Hython scored 11 while Laurent Firlotte led the work off the glass with seven rebounds. Brian DeBisschop, Ryan Whelpley and Kevin Weckworth had six rebounds each for the Dutchmen, who had a 48-42 rebounding advantage and recorded six steals.

Hartwick led by as many as 10 in the first half and 35-30 by the break. Union trailed 42-34 with 18:08 left in the second half but went on a 10-0 run in the next 5:11 sparked by six points by Hython. It was Union's first lead since 2-0. Union led 46-44 with 11:26 to play after a layup by Whelpley, but it proved to be the final lead of the night for the Dutchmen. Union was as close as 59-58, pulling to within one with 4:26 left on a Winney three. But the Hawks got three pointers by Mike Geisser and Joey Lufkin and also got six straight points in the final minutes with two free throws and two baskets off steals to seal the triumph.

Union hosts the Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament this weekend. Action begins Saturday as FDU Florham faces Trinity (CT) at 5 p.m. and Union will take on SUNY Cobleskill at 7 p.m. Sunday's consolation game is at 1 p.m. and the title contest is at 3 p.m. at the Viniar Athletic Center.
