SCHENECTADY, NY – Terell Winney scored 19 points and
Keith Callies scored 12 to lead Union College to a 75-61 men's basketball win over SUNY Cobleskill in the 2013 Sig Makofski Invitational hosted by Union at the Viniar Athletic Center.
The victory marked the first career win for Union first year head coach
Chris Murphy. The Dutchmen improved to 1-3 and the Tigers now stand 1-3 as well. Union will face FDU Florham in the Championship Game Sunday at 3 p.m. and the Consolation contest at 1 p.m. features Trinity against Cobleskill.
Union outrebounded Cobleskill 44-38 and shot 45% while holding the Tigers to 39% from the floor.
Ryan Whelpley just missed a double double with nine points and nine rebounds, and
William Hython added eight points and eight boards for the victors.
Cobleskill had three players in double figures as Cortell King scored 14 and Alexis Nunez and Mike Marcelin scored 12 each. King and
Travis Woods each had nine rebounds and Marcelin pulled down eight off the glass.
Union entered the half with a seven point advantage, and led by as many as 11 with 17:49 left at 46-35 after a Callies three pointer. Cobleskill got to within four at 58-54 with 6:51 remaining on a King jumper, but the Dutchmen pulled away with a 16-7 run in the next 5:20 en route to the win.
