POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team advanced to the Liberty League Championship game with a three set sweep (25-16, 25-15, 25-21) of St. Lawrence on Friday evening at Clarkson. Sophomore outside hitter
Kelley White was a force both offensively and defensively racking up seven kills and 10 digs in the match.
The Dutchwomen got out to an early lead in the first set as they forced a Saint Lawrence timeout with a score of 16-10. After the timeout the Dutchwomen went on a tear and eventually won the set 25-16. White tallied three kills in the set to lead the Dutchwomen while freshman
Amanda Price dished out five assists.
The Dutchwomen started strong again in the second set gaining a 15-9 advantage in the early going. After a few more possessions the Dutchwomen found themselves up 23-14 forcing another Saints timeout. The Saints tacked on one more following the timeout but an ace by junior captain
Rajpreet Dhaliwal gave the Dutchwomen the eventual set winner as the Dutchwomen went up 2-0 in the match.
The final set was a long one with both teams trading points. Head coach
Melissa DeRan called a timeout with her team up 22-21 and inspired the Dutchwomen to convert three straight points to give the Dutchwomen the victory. A kill by White eventually ended the match and sent Union to the championship match.
Dhaliwal led the Dutchwomen offensively with nine kills, with sophomores White and
Rachel Wyman close behind with seven a piece. Price continued her impressive rookie season by leading the Dutchwomen in assists with 19. Senior
Marissa Vollmer led the defense by recording 12 digs in the three sets.
The Dutchwomen will compete in the Liberty League Championship tomorrow against the winner of the Vassar and Clarkson match. The championship match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
