Hockey Dutchmen Post 3-0 Win Over #14 Cornell

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union returned to the win column with a hard-fought 3-0 victory over 14th-ranked Cornell in ECAC Hockey action Saturday from Messa Rink.

Junior goaltender Colin Stevens recorded his fourth career shutout as Cornell (3-2-1,1-2-1 ECACH) managed just 11 shots on goal.  Union (4-3-2, 3-1-0 ECACH) finished with 31 shots, outshooting its opponent for the eighth time in nine games.

Cole Ikkala, Shayne Gostisbehere and Matt Wilkins scored goals for the Dutchmen, who snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) against the Big Red.

After a scoreless first period, Ikkala broke through for his first goal of the season, finishing a rebound to the right of goaltender Andy Iles.

Union added an insurance goal at 12:22 of the third period when Shayne Gostisbehere received a rink-wide pass from freshman Eli Lichtenwald and tucked a shot inside the right post.  Lichtenwald had two assists in his first action since the season opener, having missed eight games due to injury.

Wilkins then helped Union seal the win with 2:28 left in regulation, accepting a Daniel Carr pass across the slot on a two-on-one and burying a wrister into an open net.

The Garnet and White meet arch-rival Rensselaer next weekend (Nov. 15-16) in a home-and-home series opening in Schenectady.
