SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore forward
Ryan Whelpley posted career highs with 15 rebounds and 14 points to lead Union College to a 95-75 men's basketball win over Southern Vermont at the Viniar Athletic Center Thursday night. The Dutchmen improved to 3-5 with the season high point total while the Mountaineers fell to 6-2.
Whelpley recorded his second double-double of the season.
Kevin Weckworth scored 20 points and
Deshon Burgess scored 16 with eight rebounds. The Dutchmen also got 15 points each from
Keith Callies and
Terell Winney, and Winney dished out four assists. Union shot 82% from the line, making 32 of 39 free throws, and shot 41% while holding Southern Vermont to 35% shooting. Union had a 53-44 rebounding advantage for the night. Burgess' eight rebounds and Winney's four assists were both career highs.
DeShawn Hamlet led the guests with 11 points and Antoine White and Rayshawn Taylor scored 10 points each. Hamlet had a team best seven rebounds and Taylor added three assists.
The Dutchmen led 41-36 at halftime, featuring 11 from Wentworth. Both teams were an identical 36% (13 for 36) shooting in the first 20 minutes. Union upped the lead to 11 at 54-43 with 16:40 left to play in the second half after a three pointer by Callies. The Mountaineers pulled to within seven at 67-60 with 9:59 left on a layup by Eddie Mack III, but Union went on a 14-2 run in the next 3:48 and never trailed by less then 15 the rest of the way. The largest lead was 20 at 87-67 with 4:03 left, and the final, after two free throws by Weckworth with 49 seconds remaining.
Union is idle until January 10, when the Dutchmen open Liberty League play at home against St. Lawrence at 8:00 p.m.
