Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Winney, Weckworth lead Dutchmen in 79-78 loss to Saints

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Brady Condlin scored a game high 27 points and also made a layup with 10 seconds left to lift St. Lawrence to a 79-78 men's basketball victory at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Saints improved to 4-5 and the Dutchmen fell to 3-6, and it was the Liberty League opener for both squads.

Al Jones scored 17 and Janpeter Brase had 10 with six rebounds to lead St. Lawrence. The Saints had a team high eight rebounds from Kieran Miller, and had a slim 34-33 rebounding edge on the night. St. Lawrence shot 50% for the game, including 53% in the second half.

Union, which also had strong shooting in the second half (54%) and for the game (53%), was paced by Terell Winney's 23 points. Winney made 10 of 13 shots in 38 minutes. Ryan Whelpley had his second straight double double and third of the season, with a game high 10 boards along with 12 points. Deshon Burgess scored 15, Brian DeBisschop and William Hython scored six each and Hython had seven rebounds.

Leading by four at the half at 39-35, the Saints got up by as much as nine at 56-47 with 12:34 left on a Miller layup. The guests led by that same total at 62-53 with 8:42 left after four straight points by Condlin. But Union went on a 18-8 run over the next 5:42. A Burgess layup with 3:00 left in the second half made it 71-70 Union. After a three pointer by Jones with 2:43 left, Winney answered with a three of his own for a 74-73 home lead with 2:21 left to play. But back came the Saints with a Kyle Edwards three for a 76-74 lead with 1:24 on the clock. Burgess tied it on a layup at 1:24, but a Dutchman was called for a foul with 58 seconds left and Condlin made the first free throw. He missed the second and Union got it back, and Burgess gave Union a 78-77 lead with 43 ticks left on a jumper. But 33 seconds later, Condlin's layup provided the 79-78 Saints lead and Union's drive through the lane through traffic came up short as time expired.

Union is back home Saturday for another Liberty League contest, this one against Vassar at 4 p.m.
