ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Ninth-ranked Union extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 3-3 overtime tie against top-ranked St. Cloud State before 4,327 fans at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Dutchmen won the shootout, 2-1, but per NCAA rules, the game counts as a tie in the team' s records.
Rick Bennett's squad remains unbeaten on the road (6-0-2) and unbeaten against ranked opponents (5-0-1) this season.
Union (12-3-3) took a 3-1 lead into the third period before St. Cloud (11-2-4) scored twice to force overtime. Jonny Brodzinski scored an extra attacker goal with 20 seconds left in regulation to even the contest. The Huskies took advantage of a Union penalty and pulled goaltender Ryan Faaragher to create a 6-on-4 situation.
St. Cloud led 1-0 after 20 minutes as Joey Holka one-timed a rebound in the slot after Jimmy Murray's shot was turned away by
Colin Stevens. The Huskies finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots in the opening period.
Union pushed ahead in the second period, scoring three times.
Daniel Ciampini found space between the pads of goaltender Ryan Faragher at 6:06. The goal was Ciampini's ninth of the year, tops on the Union squad. He held that honor for three minutes before
Daniel Carr notched his ninth goal by tucking the puck inside the left post while behind the goal line at 9:03.
Union scored again 64 seconds later when Carr's feed
Eli Lichtenwald's wrist shot from inside the left circle that resulted in the freshman's seventh goal of the season. The point was the 129th of Carr's career, moving him into second place on the school's all-time Division I scoring chart.
"I thought the story of the game was
Colin Stevens -- he kept us in it," said Bennett. "It was a real battle. We pushed back in the second but I think mentally we were fatigued in the third period with the penalties and it caught us in the end.
"All-in-all, for the adversity this team faced with the tough stretch of games, the players did a great job and I'm proud of them."
Having played five games in nine nights, Union is now off until Jan. 10, when it resumes ECAC Hockey play at Quinnipiac.
