Thomson tallies two power play goals, Dutchwomen fall to Maine

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team closed out 2013 with a 6-3 loss to Maine on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. With the loss the Dutchwomen drop to 6-12-0 on the season.

Senior forward Stefanie Thomson tallied two power play goals to move into fifth spot on the all-time goal scoring list. Thomson's two power play goals were her fourth and fifth of the season and the 19th and 20th goals of her career.

The Black Bears took the lead early in the first period with two power play tallies. Eve Boissonneault tallied her second goal of the season on a rebound that came off the pads of junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg. Brianne Kilgour received the primary assist off her shot from the point and Kelly McDonald received the primary assist for setting up Kilgour.

Kristin Gilmour added the second power play tally as she blasted a slap shot past Lundberg's blocker on a turnover by junior forward Christine Valente. The unassisted goal was scored at 12:33 of the first period.

Thomson would add her first goal of the night in the final moments of the first period. Thomson picked up a rebound off a shot from senior captain Maddy Norton. Thomson deked backhand and buried the backhand shot past the sprawling Black Bear goaltender Mariah Fujimagari. Junior Alex Tancrell-Fontaine picked up the secondary assist after dishing a pass to Norton. The period ended with the Dutchwomen trailing the Black Bears 2-1.

Maine started the second period much like the first. They tallied two goals in the first 13 minutes to take a 4-1 lead. The first goal came from Emilie Brigham who scored by burying a shot to the top right left corner of the net on a 2-1 rush. Hailey Browne received an assist on the play.

Maine's second goal of the period came off the skate of Shawna Lesperance. Abbey Cook took a shot from the point that deflected off the stick of Kelly McDonald to the skate of Lesperance and past Lundberg. Lundberg was replaced by sophomore goaltender Madeleine Dahl following the Lesperance goal.

Thomson added her second tally of the game with only eight seconds remaining in the second period. Thomson buried a wrist shot short-side from the left circle off a give-and-go feed from Tancrell-Fontaine. The play was set up when Thomson got the puck out of a scrum in the corner and fed Tancrell-Fontaine at the point. She then fed it back to Thomson who was left all alone by the Black Bears defenders to bury the goal. The period ended a few second later with the Dutchwomen trailing 4-2.

Maine tallied another goal halfway through the third period to take a three-goal lead when Abbey Cook buried a shot past Dahl.

The Dutchwomen would cut the lead to two with their third power play goal of the game. Sophomore forward Kathryn Tomaselli tipped in a slap pass from Norton. Tancrell-Fontaine also picked up her third assist of the game on the tally.

The Dutchwomen attempted a comeback when they pulled Dahl with 2:33 remaining in the period. The comeback attempt was unsuccessful as the Lesperance tallied an empty net goal with 35 second remaining.

Mariah Fujimagari finished the game with 18 saves and improved to 2-2-1 on the season. Lundberg allowed four goals on 12 shots and dropped to 6-12-0 on the season. Dahl had 22 saves on 23 shots in relief.

The Dutchwomen went 3-5 on the power play but also allowed the Black Bears to tally three power play goals on four attempts. The Dutchwomen tallied four power play goals over the weekend on seven attempts.

The Dutchwomen return to action in the New Year when they welcome RIT to the confines of Messa Rink for a two-game series on Jan. 3 and 4.
