Softball opens with 8-7 eight inning loss to Brandeis indoors

QUEENSBURY, NY -- Sophomore infielder Anya Kamber singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to lift Brandeis University to an 8-7 non-league softball victory over Union College at The Dome at the Adirondack Sports Complex Friday. The Judges improved to 3-0 while Union is 0-1 after opening the season in an indoor facility for the first time. Game two was suspended after two innings at the facility.

The Judges came back from a 7-1 deficit to record the win. Kamber was three for five with two RBIs and Amanda Genovese had three hits while Madison Gagnon had a homer and three RBIs. Casey Ducinski picked up the win in relief with 3 2/3 innings of four hit ball. Nikki Cote had two hits and a homer for Brandeis.

Samantha Chevalier led Union with three hits and three RBIs, including a three run homer during a five run fifth inning. Lindsay Cohen and Alyssa Wolejko had two hits each for the Dutchwomen.

Union led 7-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth after sending 10 batters to the plate in the stanza. But the Judges scored two in the bottom of that frame and added three in the sixth featuring the two run homer by Gagnon. Brandeis tied it in the seventh when Kamber scored on a hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, setting up Kamber's game winner in the next inning.

Union will return to action March 23 to face Eastern Connecticut State in the first of 12 games in Florida.
