Donohue scores 28 but Dutchmen lose 85-82 in 2 OTs at Hobart



GENEVA, NY -- The Hobart College men's basketball team defeated Union College 85-82 in double overtime. Statesman senior Stefan Thompson scored a career-high 30 points and became just the seventh Hobart basketball player to record 1,500 career points. Hobart junior Richie Bonney (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) scored 16 points before fouling out with 1:11 left in regulation.

Senior Keven Donohue played the entire 50 minutes for the Dutchmen and produced 28 points and 12 rebounds. It was Donohue's sixth double double of the season. Sophomore Terell Winney and senior Joe Mason chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Hobart kept the Liberty League lead in the standings by improving to 10-1 in the league while Union fell to 9-3. The Statesmen are 14-6 overall and the Dutchmen are now 17-4.

Donohue became only the sixth player in Union College men's basketball history to record 1,400 points. He ended the night with 1,414, and now is just 12 points away from Sam Poulis '95.

The Statesmen trailed by as many as nine in regulation, but rallied and tied the game on a free throw by Thompson with 11.8 seconds left in regulation.

In the first overtime, Hobart trailed by as many as four, but again forged a tie on a jumper by Thompson with 8 seconds left. Union got off a shot at the buzzer, but it hit the side of the backboard. Union led by two, 82-80, entering the final minute of the second overtime, but Thompson drained a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left and sophomore Connor Rehbaum made two free throws with 7 seconds remaining to clinch the victory. Union took an off-balance 3 at the buzzer that just drew iron.

Junior Joe Gibbons added 14 points and Rehbaum finished with 11 for the Statesmen. Senior Sean Peer pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds to lead Hobart to a 43-32 advantage on the glass.

Union shot 51% for the game and held Hobart to 40% shooting, but the Statesmen had a 43-32 rebounding advantage.

The Dutchmen began a string of four straight Liberty League road games. Union is at Clarkson Friday night and then play at St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon.
