Kurio power play tally unable to lift Dutchwomen over Saints

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – After two periods of play the Saints and Dutchwomen were even at two. However, two unanswered goals in the third period lifted St. Lawrence over Union 3-1 at Messa Rink Friday night.

Union (7-19-3, 0-14-3 ECAC Hockey) found themselves in penalty trouble early in the first period, as St. Lawrence (16-11-2, 11-5-1) was able to go on the power play twice. Despite having six shots on target on the two power plays, the Saints offense was thwarted by Shenae Lundberg.

Jacqueline Wand was able to put the Saints on the board early in the second stanza, as she was able to put away the Ellie Williams centering pass. Following the Wand goal, Union was able to go on the man-advantage as Abbey McRae was sent to the penalty box for tripping.

Moments later Stefanie Thomson found an open Alex Tancrell-Fontaine in which the defenseman fired a shot on target.  Carmen MacDonald initially made the save but Rhianna Kurio was there to crash the net and level the score. Both teams exchanged shots as the second period ended with the score at one all.

The third period remained tied for the first five minutes as each exchanged shots. However, St. Lawrence was able to recapture the lead as Rylee Smith netted her 11th goal of the season. She was able to handle the puck behind the net and tried to go near post on Lundberg. The first attempt was saved but the second effort went through.

The Saints were able to pad their lead with a tally by Dayle Wilkinson. After a failed clearance by the Dutchwomen defense, St. Lawrence was able to get a clear look from the point on passes by Amanda Boulier and Kayla Raniwsky for Wilkinson to wrist it through traffic.

Union was seeking to inch back into the match with less than five remaining as they pressured the Saints' defense. However, the Dutchwomen were unable to find the back of the net again as the Saints prevailed victorious in the match.

MacDonald earned the win as she improved to 14-11-2, making 25 saves in the game. Lundberg was credited the loss, stopping 27 shots in the defeat.

Union will hold their sixth annual Pink at the Rink match as they welcome No. 5 Clarkson tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Admission is free with a donation to Kristen's Kause. St. Lawrence will take on Rensselaer at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow as well.
