No. 6 Clarkson edges out Union in 3-2 defeat for the 6th annual Pink at the Rink

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Jessica Kaminsky and Kelly McGrath each had goals to give Union (7-20-3, 0-15-3) a 2-1 entering the third period. However, two Golden Knight goals including a Vanessa Gagnon deflection with 13 seconds remaining gave No. 6 Clarkson (22-7-0, 14-3-0) a 3-2 victory for the sixth annual Pink at the Rink game at Messa Rink Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the match, Kristen Shinebarger held the honor of dropping the puck as the Union women's hockey team dedicated their Pink at the Rink to Kristen's Kause. Donations from admission, raffles and gifts were donated to the Shinebarger family to help her fight with Ewing's Sarcoma. The team managed to fundraise approximately $2,200 for the family throughout the week.

In the match, Shenae Lundberg was tested early and often in the first period as she tallied 14 of her 31 saves in the match. Clarkson was relentless on the attack but the sophomore netminder was able to keep the score scoreless as the Golden Knights outshot the Dutchwomen 14-4 in the first period.

Union turned the tables on the second half, as the Dutchwomen were able to draw two penalties on Vanessa Plante and Renata Fast for checking. The power play unit was able to capitalize on the first man-advantage as Rhianna Kurio and Stefanie Thomson found between the Golden Knights defense to beat Erica Howe for the game's first goal. Clarkson struggled to gather possession of the puck as the Dutchwomen held the Golden Knights to zero shots for the opening 9:37 seconds of the first period.

Clarkson was able to level the score with less than five minutes remaining in the period with a power play goal of their own. Renata Fast freed Erin Ambrose up with a good pass, as Ambrose was able to lift the puck over the stopper of Lundberg for the equalizer. Just 25 seconds later, Union scored again as Kelly McGrath took advantage of a slip by Erica Howe to find the back of the net unassisted.

Each team exchanged shots for the opening nine minutes in the final stanza of play. Danielle Skirrow was able to line up a slap shot from the point on a Jennifer Shields pass to level the score for the Golden Knights again. Each team had close opportunities in the final 10 minutes of play. Brittany Styner found herself in the midst of the offensive third all alone on Lundberg but her bid went wide to the left. Kaminsky found herself with a good angle on Howe but her shot was off the mark as well.

The Golden Knights were able to complete their comeback as Plante's shot found the stick of Gagnon in which the puck knuckled over the shoulder of Lundberg to give Clarkson the victory.

Howe was credited with the win as she improves to 22-7-0, making 22 stops in the match. Lundberg is given the loss as she holds a record of 6-17-3. The Golden Knights held the advantage in shots and faceoffs with marks of 34-24 and 31-20 respectively. Each team netted a power play goal as Clarkson was 1-for-2 and Union went 1-for-5.

Union will play their last two road games of the regular season, as the Dutchwomen will take on Brown and Yale. The game against the Bears will start Friday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. while the Bulldogs will host the Dutchwomen on Saturday, February 16 at 4:00 p.m.
