Troy Grosenick made 31 saves, including two breakaway stops to lead No. 19 men's hockey (18-12-5) to a 4-1 win over Dartmouth (15-13-5) in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals.
Union outshot Dartmouth 41-32 for the night, as Dartmouth freshman goaltender Charles Grant made 37 stops in net.
Sophomore forward
Daniel Ciampini scored the game-winning goal, breaking a 1-1 tie late in the second period to put the Dutchmen ahead for good, just minutes after Dartmouth had evened the game.
With Union leading 1-0, Dartmouth's Matt Lindblad caught Grosenick out of position with an initial chance that went behind the net to Dustin Walsh. With Grosenick out of the net, Walsh attempted to fire a shot off the goaltender and in. The puck caromed off of Grosenick and sat on the goal line, and Tyler Sikura poked the puck just over the line at 15:12 of the second period.
Just over two minutes later, senior forward
Wayne Simpson fed sophomore forward
Daniel Ciampini in front of the net on pass off a Dartmouth skate and Ciampini beat Grant over the shoulder at 17:59 to put Union ahead 2-1.
Dartmouth opened the third period with a great chance to even the score as Eric Neiley skated in a 2-on-1, keeping the puck for a wrist shot that Grosenick gloved at the 1:37 mark.
Carr scored his second of the game later in the period, curling into the high slot and firing a wrist shot traffic into the top right corner of the net at 9:14 to put Union up 3-1.
Grosenick made his second breakaway stop of the night with a pad save on a slapshot from Eric Neiley at the 11:00 mark.
Mat Bodie sealed the win with an empty net goal at 18:29 to put the Dutchmen up 4-1.
In front of a crowd of 1,641 fans at Messa Rink, the Dutchmen game the home crowd a lot to cheer about in the early stages of the contest, as freshman forward
Matt Wilkins hit the post in the opening minutes, which was followed by a great chance from below the circle by junior forward

Carr would give Union an early lead on a deflection from just in front of the Dartmouth net at 9:46. Wilkins fed freshman defenseman
Sebastien Gingras at the point and Gingras fired a shot on net. Carr turned and deflected the puck past Dartmouth goaltender Charles Grant for his 13
th goal of the season.
Shortly after Carr's goal, Grosenick was tested for the first time all night, stopping a breakaway chance from Connor Dempsey at the 10:00 mark to keep Union in front.
Later in the period, Union had two great chances to take a two-goal lead, but came away empty handed
Ciampini deflected a shot from the point by sophomore defenseman
Shayne Gostisbehere past Grant, but the goal was waved off, as Ciampini touched the puck above the crossbar.
Moments later, Wilkins would hit yet another post, as Carr blocked a shot and skated in on a two-on-one with the freshman forward. Carr fed Wilkins, who hit the near post on a one-timer at the 14:45 mark of the first period.
Union will host Dartmouth tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. in Game 2, looking to advance to the ECAC Semifinals for the third time in the past four seasons.
