Softball splits in Florida action with extra inning win vs. Middlebury



CLERMONT, FL -- Sophomore Allyson Staats hit a three run homer and junior Alyssa Wolejko had an RBI single in the eigth to lead the Union softball team to a 10-9 extra inning victory over Middlebury Monday. The Dutchwomen lost earlier in the day to Division II Merrimack, 10-2, and now stand 2-5 on the season.

Freshman catcher Joanna Chalifoux had three hits and three RBIs for the Dutchwomen against Middlebury, while Wolejko pitched a complete game victory with six strikeouts. Union trailed 4-1 entering the sixth when the Dutchwomen scored four times. Trailing 9-5 entering the top of the seventh as the visitors, Union scored four times highlighted by the blast by Staats. Union had 10 hits on the day.

Jessa Hoffman and Sarah Boylan had three hits each for the Panthers.

In the earlier contest, Union was held to four hits by Sue Deardorff, who allowed just two earned runs in the five inning game. The Warriors had 12 hits overall, and a total of 10 players had at least one hit each.

Union is idle Tuesday, and returns to action Wednesday to face Buffalo State at 9 a.m. and Oberlin at 11 a.m.
