Women's lacrosse edged out by Ephs 10-9

CLERMONT, Fla. – Attack Emily McGrail tallied three of the Dutchwomen's nine goals but Union's rally in the second half fell short as Williams came away with the 10-9 victory in Clermont, Florida Monday morning.

Union opened up the scoring in the match as Brittany Fraser was able to draw a foul and earn a free position shot. The senior tri-captain was able to take advantage of the penalty and get it by goalie Ali Piltch to give the Dutchwomen an early 1-0 lead. Union tacked on another goal as Tory Cameron took advantage of a free position shot to double the lead for the Dutchwomen.

However, Williams responded with a pair of goals to level the match at two as Hilary Cook registered a pair of goals in under eight minutes. Union was able to recapture the lead on the ensuing draw control as Cameron won the battle. Heather Fraser provided the offense as she registered her first goal of the game to give Union a 3-2 edge. Williams came right back as Emily Whicker came away victorious on the draw control in which the Ephs offense found Cook again to give her a hat trick on the match.

With approximately four minutes remaining, Williams was able to earn their first lead in the match as a Cameron foul gave Rebecca McGovern free position shot in which the junior came away with a goal. Union scrambled to level the score before halftime as B. Fraser and Cameron each drew free position shots from the Williams defense. Piltch came up with two saves from the shots but a McGrail shot with 16 seconds left found the back of the net to make the match 4-4 entering halftime.

The Dutchwomen were able to recapture the lead quickly in the opening minutes of the second half as McGrail tallied her second goal of the game on a free position shot. Williams responded with an equalizer just 28 seconds later as McGovern slipped one by Kim Grinhaus to make the score 5-5.

Williams was able to gain their largest lead of the match as Nancy Palmer and Rebecca Bell powered the Ephs offense with their first goals of the match. The Dutchwomen were able to get within one as Heather Fraser took advantage of the free position shot.

After another McGovern goal, Union was able to level the scoring at eight with goals by Ciara Dudeck and B. Fraser. Despite their efforts, the Dutchwomen would not recapture the lead that featured four different lead changes. Goals by Bridget Malicki and McGovern put Union in a deficit with 2:01 remaining in the match. McGrail completed her hat trick to cut Williams lead in half with 1:20 remaining. However, Union would not be able to win the following draw control, as the Ephs possessed the ball for the remainder of regulation to earn the victory.

McGovern led all attackers in goals with four for the Ephs while McGrail paced the Dutchwomen with three. Piltch came up with three saves in the game and improved to 4-1 while Grinhaus drops to 0-2, registering seven saves in the defeat.
