Dutchwomen lose tight Liberty League opener, 15-14 to William Smith


SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kathleen Ragan scored five goals and Hannah Conolly scored three to lead William Smith to a 15-14 women's lacrosse victory over Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon. The Herons improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League while the Dutchwomen fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 after the league opener for both squads.

Marina Guigli made 10 saves including key stops in the final minute to preserve the lead. She stopped an Emily McGrail shot with 59 seconds left in regulaton and also Paige Smith with just 13 left in the second half. Katie Sipple had four assists.

McGrail led Union with six goals and 10 shots, and Ciara Dudeck scored three with seven shots for the Dutchwomen. Maggie Comiskey scored twice for the hosts, while Kim Grinhaus made two saves.

Union outshot William Smith, 38-23 and the Dutchwomen had five free position goals on 13 opportunities. The Herons were four for six in free position chances. William Smith won 16 of the 31 draw controls.

William Smith had a 3-0 lead 8:43 into the first half, but Union scored six straight featuring two each from McGrail and Dudeck for a 6-3 lead with 12:30 left. The Dutchwomen led 7-6 at halftime.

The Herons scored seven of the first 10 goals in the second period for a 13-10 lead with 13:01 remaining. Union got goals by Comiskey and Dudeck to make it 13-12, but Marissa Potter and Abbie West had William Smith up 15-12 with 5:04 left. McGrail scored unassisted tallies with 2:19 and then 1:51 remaining before being denied in her attempt for the tying goal in the final minute.

Union hosts Ithaca for a non-league game on Tuesday, April 2 at 4 p.m.
