Staats pitches no hitter to lead softball to sweep over Skidmore

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Sophomore pitcher Allyson Staats pitched a no-hitter in a complete game five inning victory for Union College over Skidmore College in the second game of a Liberty League softball doubleheader at Alexander Field Saturday. The Dutchwomen won the opener, 5-1, and finish the day 2-0 in league play and 5-12 overall. The Thoroughbreds stand 8-16 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Staats did not walk a batter and struck out four, and the only runner to reach base reached on an infield error in the fifth. She struck out four and posted the first no hitter for Union softball since Tiffany Ippolitti had a five inning perfect game 12-0 win over Mount St. Mary on March 31, 2010. It was Staats' first win of the season.

Union scored eight runs in the first inning, sending 14 batters to the plate. Alyssa Wolejko and Staats hit back to back homers in that frame. Each of the first five batters reached and scored, and Wolejko's homer was her first, a three run blast. For Staats, the solo homer was her second of the season. The Dutchwomen added a single run in the third and scored four in the fourth, highlighted by a two run double by Staats.

Wolejko and Staats each finished with three RBIs and Lindsay Cohen had three of Union's 10 hits. Molly O'Brien had two hits and drove in two runs.

In the first contest, Union started out strong as well. Samantha Chevalier hit a two out, two run homer, her third of the spring, to stake Wolejko to an early big lead. Earlier in the inning, Staats had an RBI double. Union added two runs in the third on an RBI single by Wolejko and a sacrifice fly by Joanna Chalifoux. Skidmore's lone run came on an error in left credited as an RBI sacrifice fly for Katie Peverada in the fifth inning.

Wolejko recorded her second win of the season, allowing the one unearned run with four hits and one walk while striking out 10. She helped her cause at the plate with two hits and Staats also had two hits while Chevalier had two RBIs. Cassie Fishkin had two of the four his for the Thoroughbreds and starter Katie Sorochka gave up five earned runs and nine hits, and struck out six.

Union is right back in action Sunday as the Dutchwomen host St. Lawrence for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
